A good night’s sleep is important for kids and adults.
Here are some facts and tips to help everyone sleep well.
- Sleep affects almost every system and type of tissue in the body, including vital organs such as the brain, heart and lungs and metabolism, immune function, mood and disease resistance
- The brain performs its “housekeeping” and general maintenance during sleep. These activities cannot be performed during the day
- How much sleep is enough varies from person to person
- Many people assume that they can catch up on missed sleep during the weekend but, depending on the degree of sleep deprivation, sleeping longer on the weekends may not adequately reduce the deficit
- Research by sleep scientists indicates that chronically sleep-deprived people are more likely to be overweight, have emotional outbursts and have an increased risk of many health issues
