Aromatic plants have been used since early civilization
- Romans used oils to scent their bodies & hair, massage & baths
- Many ancient pictorials on Egyptian temple walls depict essential oil extraction and care
- Hippocrates, the Greek physician whose influence still informs the medical community, was considered the father of modern medicine. Among other things, he studied and documented the medicinal influence of over 300 plants, and is reported to have advised that “The way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day.”
- Ancient Chinese manuscripts describe the medicinal use of aromatics
- French chemist Renè-Maurice Gattefossè known as the father of modern aromatherapy was said to discover the soothing benefits of lavender after he severely burned his hand and plunged his hand into lavender essential oil in 1910.
There are at least 33 species of aromatic plants mentioned in the Bible and as many as 1,031 references to essential oils and the plants that produce them (ointments, perfumes, spices).
Essential oils are first mentioned in the Bible in Genesis chapter 37 when Joseph was sold to Midian traders who carried spices, balm & Myrrh (Genesis 37:23 – 28)
- Queen Esther used oil of Myrrh for 6 months as a beauty treatment before going in to the king (Esther 2:12)
- Jesus received a gift of Frankincense & Myrrh at His birth (Matthew 2:11)
