Keeping our homes clean is good stewardship.

Cleaning can begin to feel like a never-ending chore.

15 Minute Nightly Cleaning Routine

I have learned to use holistic habits like setting a nightly 15-minute cleaning routine and choosing 1 day each week to do a thorough cleaning to maintain a clean home.

  1. Choose 3 rooms you use most often (mine are kitchen, bathroom, and office)
  2. Set a kitchen timer for 5 minutes per room
  3. Clean each room. Put things back in their place, sanitize and wipe the sink, toilet, and countertops, wash dishes or load dishwasher, sweep or vacuum. You will be surprised at home much cleaning can be done in 5 minutes.

I grew up using harsh chemical cleaners to clean the bathroom, kitchen, and laundry, not knowing those products were negatively affecting my respiratory and hormonal systems. I vividly remember struggling to breathe while using a pine cleaner. I would hurriedly clean the toilets, sink, and tub and run out of the bathroom.

As I began to mature spiritually and physically, I started paying attention to what I was putting on and in my body. I started researching non-toxic living, reading labels on food, personal care, and home health products, using natural DIY deodorant (WOW! That was a journey ?), creating my own laundry soap, skin moisturizers, and using plant-based cleaners.

Why Switch?

According to an online article by Harvard Health Publishing, Harvard Medical School, published April 2020, “The average woman uses 12 different beauty products every day that are filled with chemicals. These include makeup, skincare products, conditioners, and scented lotions….You might assume that all these ingredients have been tested to ensure that they’re safe for long-term use. That is not the case. At least on the federal level, no one is checking to make sure that the chemicals you’re putting on your body are harmless. Women should take some time to consider what they’re putting on their bodies each day and how it could potentially affect their health.”

According to the EWG, the environmental working group, on average, women use 12 personal care products a day, exposing themselves to 168 chemicals. Men use 6 personal care products, exposing themselves to 85 chemicals.

How I Switched

I slowly swapped out my harsh chemical cleaners for cleaning with plant-based cleaners. I started in the laundry room, making my own laundry soap. Instead of using dryer sheets, which according to a study published by the Environmental Health Perspectives found that many fragrance ingredients can be linked to “irritation of the eyes and airways, contact dermatitis, migraines, and asthmatic reactions.”, I started using dryer balls or a towel with a few drops of essential oils.

Then I swapped out toxic personal care products like hair dye, toothpaste, soap, and facial cleansers.

Now, ALL of my personal care, home health, and home cleaning products are toxic-free and I feel so much better!

It was a long journey but I am happy I stuck with it and made non-toxic a lifestyle.
